Measuring Angles with Protractors 2023

On one morning we learned what angles is and how to measure them with a protractor, We started with Ms. George putting some tape over our tables so we had to measure the angles that the tape formed and write our answer down near the angle. When we started me and my friends were quickly measuring angles and double checking for some of the difficult ones, While we were working Ms. George taught us that the interior angles of a triangle always added up to 180 degrees, We finished in about 5 minutes then began doing some other work but next week we pulled all the tape off it was really satisfying!

Room 8 Epro8 Challenge 2023

On the 28th of April the school got us 6 boxes from Epro8 that means Engineering Problem Solving and Innovative. Epro8 is a engineering program that will explain how to make things with aluminium bars, Blue and Red Connectors, Small rope, reel, Nails, Wing nuts, Gears, Crank handle, Axles, Pulleys and wheels they also supply you with 2 screwdrivers and a measuring tape. Our teacher separated to groups of 4 except for my group who had 5, My team were me Nino, Julio, Jaeden and Evon.

Our first activity was blowing up a hut but the activity was not about blowing it up a hut but building a hut which didn’t include actually blowing up a hut, The activity wants you to build a hut  700 by 500 and approximately 500mm off the ground and create a roof and it allows 400mm object that can be inside, Then after that you have to build a draw-bridge which you can use the crank handle to control it.

After the blowing up a hut activity our second building a dump truck and the bed and you have to put a lever which will make the bed tilt and pour out trash, Also there was a list of measurements we have to follow. And we had stunt man it was a huggy wuggy plushie my friend brought to school.

The final activity we did was making a playground but our teacher wanted us to do something different instead making a full playground we just had to make 3 things in a playground like slides swings monkey bars all sorts of stuff, My team made a slide, swing and a merry go round.

Epro8 was very fun and interesting with the things we made, I hope we can do Epro8 next year!

Advocate-2023

This week for R.E we had to research on an advocate which is a person who puts a case on someone else’s behalf, I chose Martin Luther King Jr. who fought for African Americans Rights and wanted everyone to be treated with equality.

People who may need an Advocate in their life

How can I be an Advocate Kai Korero like Jesus:

Help them and show hospitality to people like them that potentially needs help like helping an elderly neighbor by doing small kind gestures like helping them taking out the trash or help a a person in a wheel chair cross the road giving money to a homeless person these small gestures could lead to something big for them.

My experience with Blake NZ-VR

On the 24th of May the school invited a program called BLAKE NZ-VR which is from Sir Peter Blake a New Zealand yachtsman, Who is known for winning Whit bread the round race in 1989 and has many victories in the America Cup, But unfortunately he died in 2001 and BLAKE NZ-VR is created to show the love and care for the sea by help teaching children how to help the ocean and what humans do that harms it.

When we are all about to go in the library we saw VR (Virtual-Reality) headsets on the floor next to each other then a guy named Thomas asked all of us to down behind a headset after he introduced what Blake NZ-VR is he told us to put on the headset.

With VR headsets you can get a 360 degrees look when your watching a video that can allow 360 camera movement.

I first saw a group of fishes at the bottom of the ocean then Thomas switched it to a video it was a montage of a short clip of every video we were gonna see and I saw dolphins, sharks, whales, rainbow fish, penguins etc, When the first actual video played it was dolphins swimming near the surface and the camera was connected to a boat after the video another played I saw a whale swimming and heard it sing then a another whale came and singed and a another one followed then there was 3 whales singing the same song when the video finished, I was stunned how the whales could sing then after that we saw what looked like a kind of seals in a pond.

Thomas explained some facts about the creatures we saw like whales comes back to a spot every year to sing a song and they take some parts of each others songs and put in their own song and the whales were called southern right whale and the seals were called New Zealand sea lions. We saw a lot more like creatures like yellow eyed penguins, killer whales, sting rays, sharks, hump back whales and pilot whales.

But the most important part of why he wanted show is this is because humans hurt the ocean and the creatures in it like polluting the ocean with oil and over fishing etc, We can help in a lot of different ways like putting a limit of how many fish we can catch or never litter again. The ocean is very important to the earth the ocean feeds us with it’s creatures it regulates our climate and generates most of the oxygen we breath.

I felt very excited at the end after knowing what to do to save and protect this ocean of ours, Maybe you can help it too by checking out BLAKE NZ-VR.

Bomb Gone

It’s only 5 minutes till the detonation. Everyone is rushing to the port side deck to get ready for the explosion. I quickly got the last pair of goggles and ran fast. I can’t possibly describe sitting down on the deck. I saw everyone sitting with their backs to the sea so I followed them and turned around. I remembered my last meal and my family. At that time when everyone was running to the deck my heart was pounding like crazy. I heard our commander shouting and repeating “ALL HANDS ON DECK.” There was a broadcast saying “TWO MINUTES TILL THE BURST.” I saw my friends panicking and terrified cause, this was our first time on a frigate. 60 seconds till the burst. Everyone was closing their eyes and counting down from 60…… .1 “BOMB GONE was shouted.” There was an explosion. My eyes were closed. I saw the bones of my hands like I had X-Ray vision. Another broadcast counting back up “1, 2, 3…15” “OPEN YOUR EYES, -OFF GOGGLES, -STAND UP-and FACE THE BURST.” I immediately followed the instructions. I opened my eyes, took off my goggles, stood up and faced the burst. A mushroom cloud appeared in the sky. I regretted my choices as I knew that the British were just using us for test dummies.

I felt my body getting weak and tired and put my hands on my ears to silence the sound of the explosion as it got louder and louder.  At that time, I was now thinking about my future and how I may have destroyed it.

Room 8 Experiences Canoeing 2023

On the 15th of March the Year 7 and 8’s went to the Manukau Outrigger Canoe Club to have a go at canoeing.

When we all got off the bus and sat down near their garage we made teams of 5.  The coaches taught us how to use the paddles and what to expect in the wkak. We all walked down to the canoes and got to our positions.

We started paddling, it was pretty fun until after 5 minutes and my hands were hurting like crazy. I hit my hands on the canoe by accident slamming them with the paddle. The salty water got into my eyes, just everything was hurting. Our coach told us to not paddle any more, have a break and enjoy the sea. He talk about the back story of the area. It was a nice time just chilling out from all the paddling and looking at the beautiful sea. It was only for 5 minutes UNTIL WE RACED THE OTHER TEAM. We had a lot of strong people on our team and they have mostly girls but the thing is we didn’t HAVE ANY COORDINATION while the team we were racing against were counting every time they paddled. They were incredibly in sync while we are off time. Our coach didn’t say anything but it ended in a tie cause our brute strength still kinda worked.

After that the second race happened it was basically the first race but we were extra tired as we didn’t get a break after, and we lost to be fair they had better paddles with wood and a better canoe I’m just trying to make an excuse for why we lost. Then 1 minute after the race, the third race we used our hands which we actually won cause we had a lot of boy’s on our team with big hands.

After we got back to the shore our coach immediately chose me to get off cause I looked the most tired and the others who were tired I wasn’t even mad…I was tired. When they were all done canoeing we got the canoes back in their garage, changed, ate our morning tea and got to the bus to go school safely. It was a good experience I do want to learn more and I can’t get more excited when we go again in Term 2.

Clay Work 2023

This year Room 8 is reading a book based on World War II following a Jewish child named Georg trying to survive in Nazi Germany and his evacuation to London.

On the 10th of March we used clay to make a critical moment from the book. My group chose the scene where Georg, the main character, sees the destruction of London and his favorite place the Library is gone.

The Library was his favorite place as he liked the children’s books that taught him about animals and helped him learn more English. There was also a worker who cared about him and treated him with kindness.
